What's the Market For 12 Years of Concussions?

Trent Green may want to pay attention to this one, as it appears that (former?) Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas is looking for a long-term contract to reward his 12 years of hard work in the NFL.

And when you're an aging linebacker in search of a deal, where better to look than New England? A graduated Junior Seau found home on the East Coast, and Tedy Bruschi is no spring chicken. Thankfully for Thomas, both of the aforementioned are free agents this season, and may not be back to open up a slot in their vaunted 3-4.

The catch will obviously been in the "guaranteed money" portion as I can't imagine many teams would want to back up the truck for a 35-year old linebacker that has missed a handful of games over the last few years, with the most recent due to concussions - not the greatest of injuries for a veteran to endure.

For those that missed Super Agent Drew Rosenhaus over the past few months may be in luck with this one, as he's being mighty persistent.

“We had a great visit in New England,” agent Drew Rosenhaus wrote in a text message last night. “They offered him a contract and we will continue negotiations.”

Read: They didn't offer us enough money, so we'll make a few more phone calls.

Dallas, New Orleans, Buffalo and the New York Jets are all said to be interested in Thomas' services. New Orleans seems like a decent option to me, as their linebacking corps could use some veteran leadership (and some talent to go with it). But if any team is loose enough with their wallet to give Thomas long-term, guaranteed money, I would be shocked - unless it was with the New York Knicks.

Weeken Warriors: Link Dump

I apologize for the lack of activity this week, as the whole "real job" thing gets in the way at times. Anyone willing to pay me to do this, please email to the address in the sidebar, and I'll ensure that your RSS readers are filled up daily. Now, here's what a few others have been saying while I've been a working man...

- I wish I had more time to discuss this whole Patriots/Steelers video-taping issue. Thankfully, Ryan Wilson has loads of time and resources over at the FanHouse. Go check it out there. [FanHouse]

- I continue to love Terrell Owens. I think that this may have just made it that much better. [Awful Announcing]

- For those of you that wonder what on earth happens to all of the t-shirts for the losing Super Bowl team [JetsBlog]

- Fantasy Football fanatics may want to adjust their Tight End rankings a bit. Alge Crumpler is no longer in the ATL. [AJC]

- A quick reminder that the world is a very, very unfair place [Sports Illustrated]

- I sure hope to come up with some time in the near future. I think the upcoming NFL draft needs some more blogging [Free Press]

- And while this has nothing to do with football, and I'm a few days behind the curve, this story about Cat Gaffney (Mighty Ducks fans know what's up) deserves some love [Rumors and Rants]

More Late Hits To Come: Rodney Harrison Returning For Another Season

News out of the Boston area appears to show that the National Football League will be have a few more fines to issue out next season. Perhaps not wanting his lasting impression to be allowing David Tyree to make one of the greatest catches of all time, Patriots strong safety Rodney Harrison will likely return for the 2008 slate.

The 35-year old defensive back hinted in the Boston Herald that he would be honoring the final year of his contract, hopefully ending his career with another championship. Had the Super Bowl ended with a Pats win, we would likely be seeing Harrison, among others, joining pre-game teams on a bevy of television networks. Instead, it looks like this group could be giving it another go 'round.

"We went 18-0. We lost one game. I don’t know how devastating that can be in terms of us losing our whole mentality and what we’ve worked so hard for.

We still have the core guys here. And we have a lot of young talent in that locker room. We still have the best head coach in the league. So I don’t think you have to worry about the Patriots being competitive or even losing that edge.”

Harrison will always stick in my mind as a guy who jumps on piles, talks trash during every play, and missed half of this past season due to violating the substance abuse policy. His play and persona obviously mean more to the fans of New England - and for good reason. Even after missing a slew of games this year, the veteran racked up 68 tackles, seven passes defended and an interception.

But will he be able to make up for that one pass that he couldn't quite get to?

Weekend Warriors: Link Dump

It's that time of the week again. A crisp 30-something degrees outside in Cleveland with nary a football game to watch. And I guess I have to count that whole Pro Bowl game as something to watch for tomorrow as there are a handful of my Browns "representing" the AFC. But until then, check out some of these places in the meantime...

- Someone obviously isn't as excited to watch the Browns in the Pro Bowl as I am. Understandably. [Rumors and Rants]

- S2N is holding down SportsByBrooks during this lovely Saturday. Pay him a visit. [SportsByBrooks]

- While I didn't touch on the discovered treasure that was the Chris Berman video (as about 100 other blogs did), there are a few more that are worth some attention. BallHype has the goods here, here and here. [BallHype]

- KSK digs up an actual petition from Pats fans to replay the last 1:40 of the Super Bowl. And boy do they ever. While Pats fans should be ashamed of themselves, they got what was coming to them by these guys. And Hines Ward. [KSK]

- And finally, the story of the Giants fan that got into the Super Bowl party. Needless to say, he was pretty excited. [Deadspin]

Spagnuolo to Washington: Crossing Boundaries, Again?

If you have ever visited any of the key NFC East blogs (i.e. The 700 Level, Mr. Irrelevant), you're likely aware of the disdain that these fans have for the other three teams within their division. In fact, even when they are happy for the other team, they still find a way to crowbar in a little backhand or two. All of us football fans do it, it’s in our blood.

Which is why this piece from the New York Daily News caught my eye. No unit was more heralded in this past weekend's Super Bowl than the defense of the New York Giants; led by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Why it was news that the championship team's defensive coordinator was at their celebration parade is beyond me. But the part that followed rang even louder.

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was at the parade, but afterwards he was expected to board a flight to Washington where he will meet with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder tonight. He’ll meet again with Snyder and his lieutenants tomorrow morning before returning to New Jersey.

Oddly enough, Spagnuolo was with the Philadelphia Eagles as a linebacker coach before taking the gig with the Giants. Its one thing to take advantage of success, but when curious to see what Giants fans think of this development regarding yet another NFC East team, I put on my detective hat and went to work. Big Blue View, a Giants fan blog had the following to say:

Losing Spagnuolo, whose passion, energy and aggressive style turned a porous defense into a dominant, championship-caliber one, would be a devastating blow
to the Giants. The Giants' defenders, who took so well to his aggressive style and executed his complicated blitz packages to perfection, certainly don't want to go into next season without him.
And the Giants General Manager agrees.

Giants GM Jerry Reese understands what he has in Spagnuolo. "We’ll make every effort to keep him," Reese said. "We sure don’t want to play against him with the Redskins because we know what he’ll bring to the table. If he gets a shot at a head coach’s job, Godspeed."
As a Browns fan, I can understand where the G-men are coming from in the fact that it was rumored that Rob Chudzinski was being sought after by the Baltimore Ravens. The quick fix was GM Phil Savage locking Chudzinksi up with a two-year extension, hoping that he can continue to help Cleveland’s assent in the AFC. Perhaps Reese needs to break out the check book, and pronto, if he intends on holding on to the one defensive coordinator that was able to stop the vaunted New England defense. And just happened to do so on the biggest stage possible.

Of course, they can just let him go to the Redskins, only to have him complete the circle by ending up in a front office job with the Cowboys...

Capitol Hill Moves On To Football

Over the last several months of the steroids-in-baseball talk, many wondered when Washington D.C. would start to sniff around the NFL. Well, it appears that a few of our Government's finest have began to ask some poignant questions to the league's commissioner Roger Goodell.

Oh, no. Not about steroids. Don't be absurd. About the tapes that he allegedly destroyed after the whole debacle following the New York Jets/New England Patriots opening week game. That's right, your United States Senators are now interested in Spygate, folks.

Goodell reportedly fielded a handful of questions regarding the situation as well as his destroying of the actual footage that was turned in by the Patriots organization. But if you think that his justification was accepted, think again.

[Sen Arlen] Specter, R-Pa., said Goodell's explanation, "didn't make any sense at all."

But this is one that kills me:
Congress is interested because, according to Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the issue could put the league's antitrust exemption at risk.

"I do believe that it is a matter of importance," Specter said. "It's not going to displace the stimulus package or the Iraq war, but I think the integrity of football is very important, and I think the National Football League has a special duty to the American people — and further the Congress — because they have an antitrust exemption."

Goodell himself feels that his monetary fine as well as the stripping of a draft pick has "sent a message" to the rest of the league. While we can debate this to no end, the fact that United States Senators feel that a professional football franchise allegedly taping the defensive signals of another team even deserves to be in the same light as the Iraq war or Economic stimulus package speaks volumes.

Congress can claim that they are aiming to curb steroid use in baseball due to the after-effects on those that take it. Unless camera lenses are proven to cause cancer, or someone gets decapitated by a tripod, I personally could not care less. Yes, I can side with those that hate New England. I get that. But if it would have been (for example) the St. Louis Rams that had been filming signs, would anyone care? Let alone members of our Congress? Antitrust all you want. This is simply ridiculous.

Laying Down The Chips: Super Bowl Proposition Bets

If you have no rooting interest in this weekend's Super Bowl - aside from hoping for one of the biggest upsets in NFL history - there are fewer things better than the proposition bets.

Longest carry? Over/under for pass completions? Bodoglife.com has it all. I did a pretty not-so-quick breakdown of some of the better bets over at WaitingForNextYear. If gambling is your thing, if it were legal, I suggest you head over there and scope it out.

I even gave my thoughts on this year's National Anthem, and took an awful lot of "overs." Check it out here.

Thanks, all.

When Worlds Collide: Junior Seau On Howard Stern

There is no hiding the fact that the media ascention on Arizona will hit the ground running. Going into this week's big game, radio host Howard Stern managed to haul in Junior Seau, the veteran linebacker from the New England Patriots. As if being on the phone with a room full of New York Giants fans is not hard enough, it did not take long for Howard to start asking all of the important questions...

A few items of mention, paraphrased to the best of my ability, with my responses following:

- Regarding "the boot," anything that Tom Brady does is a big deal. This boot, however, is not (Can't a boy dream?)

- Samoans (Seau's heritage) no longer eat people (But no mention of steroids)

- Regarding possible retirement, Junior is taking things "one day at a time" (We would be crazy to not assume that this week's game will have an impact on this decision. I mean c'mon...18 years?)

- Seau reiterated that he did not "retire" from San Diego, but he did "graduate" (Good to see that this charade is still in full effect)

- Seau is single, admittedly has a lot of "friends," but will cut them off on Thursday as he will turn his focus to Sunday's game (At least he has his priorities in line)

- When asked if Tom Brady has a small penis, Seau rejects the notion of ever checking out his teammates' genitals (Get this guy on the Moment of Truth!)

- His real name is Tiaina, which is justification enough to go by the name "Junior" (Good move, Junior)

- Seau does not "do" celebrities, but rather hunts out the "low key women" (Reggie Bush should take note)

- And most importantly, he has never had relations with a cheerleader (Something tells me he is speaking specifically in regards to New England. San Diego? Forget about it)

Seau has two other phone interviews to do today, likely starting off the media blitz that will be Arizona this week. However, something tells me that this will be the only interview where he fields the questions about Tom Brady's penis.

"Wait, Who's #91?"

One of these people is not like the others

As I unassumingly watched the close to the 2007 season, I witnessed the team of my rooting interests become mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, despite a stellar and unexpected season. It was a season that can be described by several key events, whether it be Michael Vick's trial, Patriots perfection, Sean Taylor's unfortunate death, Bobby Petrino bolting for the NCAA and even a little Pacman Jones sprinkled on top for good measure.

Thinking of Sean Taylor, I noticed that my Cleveland Browns were still sporting the "21" stickers on their helmets, causing me to turn my attention to other teams to see if they were still depicting their remembrance. Of course, the Washington Redskins were displaying the number of their fallen teammate, but were others?

I noticed one team that was not with the rest of the NFL in canonizing the former defensive back. Perhaps they stuck out to me due to the media inundation that were to be broadcast over my television, but possibly because of their choice to not take part in said tribute: The New England Patriots.

When I first noticed this a few weeks back, my Pavlovian response was to jump on to this wonderful medium and bad mouth the team and all that they stood for. How could they not show their respects for a player who had just been brutally slain a few weeks back? Must they be that cavalier towards the rest of the league? Who do they think they are? I mean with their hoodies and model girlfriends. How condescending are they? Right? Right?

Not so fast.

Watching yesterday's games with my fiancée, her question encapsulated what the casual fan may have been thinking this entire time. After watching Tom Brady walk off of the field following a three-and-out, she saw the back of his helmet and said, "Wait, Who's number 91?" After I explained the entire story about Marquise Hill, it had hit me. Was his death simply glossed over by so many? The Joe Bucks of the world can mention it once per week, but is that ample coverage? I know that it did not occur during mid-season, and it was not a homicide, but shouldn't this be known?

Why didn't the rest of the league don "91" stickers on their helmets? Was it because Hill wasn't an All-Pro? Maybe because he didn't have flashy nickname on or off of the field? After all, he only had three tackles in all of last season, how good could he have been? How would anyone know who he was? Should this even matter?

The Patriots defensive end that suddenly died this past 28th day of May spent many of his last days helping New Orleans residents rebuild their homes after Hurricane Katrina. While residents of Louisiana, his teammates at LSU, and his teammates on the New England Patriots remember Hill, many casual fans are left pondering the story of the former second-rounder. Jarvis Green, his teammate at both the college and professional levels, wore Hill's shoulder pads for the season - a friend's way to memorialize.

This is not an attempt to knock down the celebration of any fallen athletes that have received praise for their hard work and for what they meant to their teammates or fans. It is simply an open-ended question, in attempt to figure out why certain players receive different levels of remembrance. Who are we to judge? Maybe the Patirots have a point after all.

Paging Drew Bennett

[dial tone...]

[dialing Berkeley, CA phone number]

[phone rings]

Hello? Is Drew there?

Yes Mrs. Bennett, this is Billy Volek. I'm a quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, but I used to play with Drew back when we were in Tennessee.

Yes, Mrs. Bennett. I'm still in the league.

Well, yes, I was supposed to be the starting quarterback in Tennessee after Steve left, but then they drafted this kid out of Texas and then everything went down hill from there.

Yes, he's faster than I am. But his arm is questionable.

Oh, you've seen him play?

Well anyways, I was just wondering if Drew would be interested in playing with me this week. See, we're really screwed going into New England, and it is a playoff game. Our running back LaDainian is listed questionable with a hyperextended knee, and I think there's a good chance that I'm even going to play.

No, no, Mrs. Bennett, I'm not the number one quarterback for San Diego. The kid who was playing ahead of me has two sprained knees. Yes, I know he told the Indianapolis fans that he would be back from his injury, but he knows not what he says sometimes.

Okay, most of the time.

Well, you see, while we were able to win last week's game, I think that we may be in a bit of a bind this week. We're facing this guy you may have heard of. His name is Tom Brady and he's pretty good, so we...

Oh, you know Tom? Your what is named "Tom?" Oh, well, that's nice.

So, as I was saying. I think it would be nice to have Drew on my team again. You know, to rekindle the flame per se. Back in '04, we had one hell of a season. Drew caught 80 passes for 1200 yards and 11 touchdowns that year!

Yes, I know ma'am. He has only caught 10 touchdowns since then. But that's because I'm not his quarterback anymore. I'm the yin to Drew's yang, Mrs. Bennett.

What do you mean "that's weird?"

No, its just something that us football players say.

Oh, Drew's never said anything like that?

Well, OK. If you could just pass along the message that I called, it would be great. We could really use him this week. I really miss him, and think it would be nice if... [click]

Bloggers Blogging Their Blogs

Greetings, all. I've been putting in a bunch of time over at CSM, so that's why this is the first post of the week. For today's minute, click here. But just because I'm not pumping out a ton of NFL love here, it doesn't mean you shouldn't get to check out what others are saying...

- By now, you've likely heard about the Kelly Tilghman/Tiger Woods fiasco. How she didn't know that the words "lynching" and "Tiger" shouldn't go together is beyond me. But Rumors and Rants thinks Kelly's a softy, and offers some advice. And yes, I know it's not football related - it's just a good post. [Rumors and Rants]

- Clemson's Aaron Kelly is reportedly leaving for the NFL. Let's just say he won't be pulling a 99 in the strength category for next season's edition of Madden. [NFL FanHouse]

- BallHype is rolling out a series on tortured franchises. While I await the Cleveland [enter team here] edition, check out today's version on the Philadelphia Eagles. [BallHype]

- The Jaguars are apparently jumping on the "New England Cheated" bandwagon. Do we really need to get them riled up for the playoffs? [Awful Announcing]

- Niners Nation weighs in on the hiring of Mike Martz. Too bad their first round pick goes to New Englad this year, they could have drafted a nice receiver. Right, Charles Rodgers? [Niners Nation]

That's it for now. I hope to weigh in on some thoughts regarding the Colts and Jags in the next day or so. Come back soon!

Edwards and Cribbs: On to Hawaii

While the Browns still have two [regular season] games remaining, the Pro Bowl rosters that were released yesterday have this fan pretty excited. While I tried my best to lobby for both Braylon Edwards and Derek Anderson to be named to the squad, I will be more than happy to settle for Edwards and teammate Josh Cribbs as they were both named to represent the AFC - and deservedly so.

Yes, it would be nice to have more than two players recognized for the season that the Browns have produced thus far, but let's focus on the good stuff here - we the Browns haven't had a member named to this team since 2001. Kellen Winslow, Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach and Derek Anderson were all worthy of making the squad. In fact, each of these guys could likely play anyways as they were named as first alternates.

This should be the season that garners the O-Line and our quarterback some recognition. Next year, the media will finally pay attention from the beginning, opposed to just penciling in Ben Roethlisberger and Johnathon Ogden's names out of the gate.

Now let's focus on the Bengals...

(Side note: How stacked is the AFC this season where Wes Welker's 96 receptions for 1,000 yards and eight TDs isn't good enough to make the team?)

Jason Webster Resurrection?

The Buffalo Bills have been one of the NFL's better stories of this season. Many pundits had them pegged to be one of the worst teams in the league. The team decided to prove a few people wrong by rolling to a 5-4 record - good enough for second in the AFC East behind some team from New England.

Opening day saw them lose one of four games as they lost to Denver 15-14. Cornerback Jason Webster broke his forearm in that game and was subsequently placed on the Injured Reserve, ending his season.

However, if you're one of those guys that uses Yahoo!s forecasting system for your fantasy leagues, they've pegged Webster to put up nearly nine points this week as the Bills take on the New England Patriots.

Check it out here...

So, if you're a risk-taker, you can plug the injured (and inactive) Webster into your lineup and see if he can achieve his forecasted six tackles and one-tenth of an interception.

In fact, I suggest you forward this on to all of your IDP leaguemates and suggest they do just that.

Enough With CBS Already*

Even when the Colts/Pats game is over, we're still inundated with the game itself. No, not the outcome. The sound system.

Everyone and their brother has voiced their opinion on the whole Colts-Pats-Crowd-Noise issues that supposedly took place this past Sunday. I say "supposedly" as I live in the Cleveland market, and did not get to see the game. But I digress.

While we can all have our opinions on both teams and their possible cheating reputations, the NFL's response to this mess has me thinking.

Via the Boston Globe, NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello states:

"CBS has informed us that the unusual audio moment heard by fans during the Patriots-Colts telecast was the result of tape feedback in the CBS production truck and was isolated to the CBS broadcast. It was in no way related to any sound within the stadium and could not be heard in the stadium."

If this is the case, CBS just needs to give up their whole coverage of football all together. Not only can the network not get the video portion of their coverage right, now they go ahead and jack up the audio? Do we ever have this with Fox? ABC? The WWL? While we may have are issues with some of the commentary within each of the networks, do any of the others get the actual transmission of the game any worse than CBS?

Not having a full stable of High Definition cameras in the year 2007 is completely absurd. Using tapes for audio sources may just be worse. Even recordable compact disks would be pushing the envelope in today's era of digital music, sound recording and editing.

Yes, I know the almighty dollar decides who gets to broadcast what games. However, networks should spare some of the money and reinvest it into the firm. Small market day-time radio shows use digital clips for their sound bites. CBS, a multi-multi billion dollar corporation, however? Nope, they go with tapes. Skipping tapes that absorb all of the NFL-related news on a Monday. CBS should thank all of sports coverage for the free publicity today - even though it just shows their further inadequacies as a sports broadcasting network.

Pick 'Em: Hatin' On The Home Teams

Wrap it up, Larry

After rocking a 4-for-4 last week, I'm not feeling too good about this week. That pesky law of averages, I tell ya.

One thing that I'm sticking with is my love for road teams. I love it when teams that are just plain shitty get extra points because they're at home. Like New Orleans wasn't going to piss all over San Francisco because they're in San Fran? Please. On to this week's picks... Tread with caution, but if I go 4-0 again, I'll have to rub it in your face for not listening.

New England (-5) over INDIANAPOLIS
I thought a bit about taking Washington last week. I felt it was just time for the Pats to at least not cover. I mean the Browns almost did it, why couldn't Washington? Well, about 45 points later, I'm glad I opted for Green Bay getting some love. Until someone at least comes close to beating the Pats, they're a mainstay here. Of course, that "someone" could be Indy...

Houston +3 over OAKLAND
Both teams have lost three games in a row. Houston's passing offense is 4th in the NFL while Oakland gives up 328 yards per game. Their passing D isn't as good as it was last season, and frankly, I'm just not going to back a team that can't sell out a home game.

Arizona +3.5 over TAMPA BAY
With news that Larry Fitzgerald knocked up a cheerleader, he's going to have to earn some more money within the next year or so. There's no time like the present, Fitzy. Go nuts. On the field this time.

Washington -4 over NEW YORK JETS
The Jets are just one of those teams that I can't take without getting at least a touchdown. They don't even play at home when they're home. New York is full of Giants fans - don't kid yourself. Plus Kellen Clemens will be starting, Laveranues Coles is not. Washington has plenty of scoring to do given last week's disaster. Why not take it out on a guy that used to coach for Belichick?

Good luck this week....

Morning YouTubeness: Better Late Than Never

Not to go back to the draft, but when Miami passed on Brady Quinn for Ted Ginn Jr., a few eyebrows were raised. While there has been jokes about Ginn getting his sophomore slump out of the way this season, Ginn decided to wait until week eight, in London no less, to haul in his first career touchdown pass.

With Chris Chambers heading to San Diego, this kid is your new #1 receiver, Dolphins fans. Embrace it.

I love the commentary after the grab saying that the Dolphins were "an extra point away from being three down." I wish someone would've said that in the Patriots/Redskins game, after the 'Skins scored to bring it within 45.

T.O. Is OK By M-E

While many fans of the NFL cannot stand Terrell Owens, I have not been phased. Possibly because he has yet to ruin a team of my liking, I think he's a player that runs his mouth, but backs it up with huge games week in and week out. He's like a Chad Johnson without the gold teeth.

Earlier this week, I posted this video that included a Terrell Owens touchdown, followed by a celebration that paid tribute to the New England Patriots.

Well, while I was out, news struck that Owens was in fact fined for his antics.

Thankfully, my boy came through with his defense of what he did.

"I'm like [Bill] Belichick," Owens said. "I misinterpreted the rules."

Wonderful. If anything, Owens loves using current events in his touchdown celebrations. While anyone can pretend that they're rowing a boat, Owens brings his A-game. Pretending to be asleep after allegations of sleeping through a meeting? Classic. And they just keep getting better.

I have a feeling that this won't be the last interview with Owens this season, and unless you're a fan of the Eagles, Niners or Ravens, you should keep your ears peeled because it's bound to be worth listening.
