Burritos Make Cedrick Wilson Angry

When looking at what teams have done in the off-season, one team that hasn't done much to get better is the Pittsburgh Steelers. While I thought that Tomlin and Company would want to capitalize on a career year by their quarterback, you can't deny that the black and gold have lost more than they have gained. And as of today, they've lost one more after releasing wide receiver Cedrick Wilson.

Wilson, apparently longing to be accepted by Najeh Davenport, got into a little altercation with his former girlfriend. In a Mexican restaurant.

Wilson, 29, was charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct after allegedly hitting his former girlfriend Wednesday night. According to Northern Regional Police, Wilson struck Lindsey Paulat, 26, in the face at the Patron Mexican Grill in Pine Township.

Ced may want to think twice about this next time, as it appears that his ex-girl has been known to pack some heat from time to time.

The mother of Wilson's 1-year-old daughter, Paulat was involved in a 12-hour armed standoff with police on January 19 and currently is awaiting a hearing on charges of discharging a firearm in an occupied structure. After getting in an argument with Wilson, Paulat allegedly fired two shots from a handgun in Wilson's house. Wilson filed for a protection-from-abuse order two days later, claiming he feared Paulat would shoot him.

I would say that his "fear" has a bit of support. If I were Wilson, I'd have my agent lobbying to have me added to a team out West. Hey, I hear there's an opening in Seattle!

Report: Reggie Bush Will Try Now

It looks like the New Orleans Saints and keeper-league fantasy owners will have something to look forward to this season: Reggie Bush will focus on football this year.

This will all come conveniently after a sub-par sophomore season that saw the former second-overall selection get the first crack at carries following the knee injury to teammate Deuce McAllister. Bush didn't respond well to the increased workload, averaging only 3.7 yards per carry over the course of the season.

Yes, he remains a lethal weapon in terms of his pass-catching abilities, but those that thought his game would translate flawlessly to the next level have been met with quite a wall. The final four games of the 2007 season were played sans-Bush, and all of the media blitz turned to his "relationship" with Kim Kardashian along with the possibility that the running back received some special treatment at the University of Southern California. When books titled Tarnished Heisman hit the shelves, it's never going to cast a great light.

But while the lawsuit is pending, Bush claims that this season will be greeted with more focus.

"That's what I feel like and that's why I'm taking a whole different approach this year in just how I go about my business and my life," Bush said. "As football goes and in very aspect of my life I'm just trying to cut everything down. Cut a lot of stuff out. Cut a lot of people out, and just focus on football."
On the 205th tips us off on the fact that Bush's new-found focus may not be starting off on the right foot. But when you sit courtside, where the limelight shines bright, "focus" may be one of the last things on one's mind.

Bengals Fans: The World Is Against Us!

The NFL Free Agency period is off and running. I could attempt to recap what went down this past weekend, but a quick Google search or a trip to NFL.com can give you all of the details. But with that said, one deal has stuck out so far: That involving defensive tackle Shaun Rodgers.

You see, Rodgers was supposedly all but packed for his relocation to Cincinnati, but the NFL had other ideas. The defensive tackle was going to be dealt to Cincy for a third and fifth round draft pick, but the office of the NFL rescinded the offer - with the sticking point having something to do with Rodgers' roster bonus?

Either way, the big man is on his way to Cleveland for a third-round selection, and cornerback Leigh Bodden. And Bengals fans are not happy.

Here's just a snippet of the comments that could be found at the Bengals Blog over at the Cincinnati Inquirer:

Just an excuse for the NFL to get back at the Bengals for past problems.

There's only two scenarios here and both are horrible:
1) Bengals front office works on a trade all day and doesn't make it work under league ules. So in this case they are overmatched and incompetent. 2) The league really does have it out for the Brown family and Bengals (handling Odell, unfair suspensions, this trade) Either option makes me want to give up the NFL.

Ah, the Bungles strike again. If the Browns signed Rogers this will be very bad. If so Goodell, the NFL and the rest for nixing the deal. Looks like 1 more year of false hope. thanks Roger, u b@stard.

You state that the trades can only involve draft choices, how can the Browns deal involve a current player and be valid? Not being a conspiracy theorist, but it seems like the commissioner's office has gone out of its way over the last year to screw over the Bengals at any opportunity. Didn't know the commissioners office was on the schedule every year.

So, just to recap a few of these...

Roger Goodell obviously has it in for the Bengals because of a few character issues that can be found on their roster. In fact, he's their 17th game - believe it or not.

Thus, he nixed a trade that would benefit the team to even up the score a bit. A score set by guys like Chris Henry and Odell Thurman. Speaking of Thurman, the handling of his off-field issues is apparently "unfair," as well as other suspensions handed to the team. Evidently, multiple arrests and drug issues are just par for the course. And if they aren't, the Commish will find a way to "get back" at whichever teams employ players that "lack judgment."

Jeff Fisher may want to keep his eye out for this. You never know when further Pacman-related punishments will go down.

Paging Drew Bennett

[dial tone...]

[dialing Berkeley, CA phone number]

[phone rings]

Hello? Is Drew there?

Yes Mrs. Bennett, this is Billy Volek. I'm a quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, but I used to play with Drew back when we were in Tennessee.

Yes, Mrs. Bennett. I'm still in the league.

Well, yes, I was supposed to be the starting quarterback in Tennessee after Steve left, but then they drafted this kid out of Texas and then everything went down hill from there.

Yes, he's faster than I am. But his arm is questionable.

Oh, you've seen him play?

Well anyways, I was just wondering if Drew would be interested in playing with me this week. See, we're really screwed going into New England, and it is a playoff game. Our running back LaDainian is listed questionable with a hyperextended knee, and I think there's a good chance that I'm even going to play.

No, no, Mrs. Bennett, I'm not the number one quarterback for San Diego. The kid who was playing ahead of me has two sprained knees. Yes, I know he told the Indianapolis fans that he would be back from his injury, but he knows not what he says sometimes.

Okay, most of the time.

Well, you see, while we were able to win last week's game, I think that we may be in a bit of a bind this week. We're facing this guy you may have heard of. His name is Tom Brady and he's pretty good, so we...

Oh, you know Tom? Your what is named "Tom?" Oh, well, that's nice.

So, as I was saying. I think it would be nice to have Drew on my team again. You know, to rekindle the flame per se. Back in '04, we had one hell of a season. Drew caught 80 passes for 1200 yards and 11 touchdowns that year!

Yes, I know ma'am. He has only caught 10 touchdowns since then. But that's because I'm not his quarterback anymore. I'm the yin to Drew's yang, Mrs. Bennett.

What do you mean "that's weird?"

No, its just something that us football players say.

Oh, Drew's never said anything like that?

Well, OK. If you could just pass along the message that I called, it would be great. We could really use him this week. I really miss him, and think it would be nice if... [click]

Ocho Cinco Feels "Mistreated?"

In a season where Chad Johnson was supposed to be "bringing sexy back," the Bengals had one of the worst seasons in recent history - drawing criticism of both the coaching staff and the players involved.

An ESPN interview with former loud-mouthed receiver Keyshawn Johnson caught the ire of many fans as the pot was calling out the kettle in many instances, as the retired Johnson was targeting the All-Pro Johnson for his team's demise.

Well, in a recent interview on ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning, Chad Johnson exclaimed that he felt mistreated by the Bengals organization, as no one stepped up to his defense when fingers were being pointed.

Johnson went on to say that the team should then "further itself from the problem," hinting that a trade demand was on the horizon, if not already on the table.

In 2006, Johnson signed a six-year deal for $35.5 million. Though hauling in 93 passes for over 1,400 yards this season, it has become evident that "CJ" was not the go-to receiver for the Bengals anymore, as teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh caught 112 passes for 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns (Johnson had eight).

Recent news of Houshmandzadeh's contract has hit the wires as the Bengals reportedly plan on reworking his current deal of four years and $13 million, which was signed back in 2005. The final straw for the organization, as well as Johnson, may have been the fact that Houshmandzadeh was named to the Pro Bowl this season, and Johnson was not, despite being third in the NFL in receive yards.

To Make Matters Worse...

...For Browns fans, that is.

Scouring Rotoworld this afternoon, and I fould this little blurb on (Titans Quarterback, Geico Caveman) Kerry Collins.

Kerry Collins, speaking on WFAN, said that the Titans kneeled [sic] down at the end of the Colts-Titans game because they knew the Colts wouldn't call a timeout.

Collins said that the Titans originally called a running play, but he was told over his headset that the Colts wouldn't call a timeout to potentially force Tennessee to punt with less than 20 seconds left. Pressed further, Collins said the Colts and Titans coaches had "a communication."

"A communication?" The note went on to mention possible collusion. The only question that I have is, possible? How is this considered "possible?" If the Colts let on that they threw in the towel, and the Titans did nothing to continue the game, how is this "possible" collusion?

If you were a bit preturbed by Tony Dungy before this news, you're likely not going to be feeling any better about your 10-6 football team not being in the post season. And don't get me wrong. I do not think that this would have made a difference in the game - it's just some more salt in the wound that was Jim Sorgi's attempt at looking like a real quarterback.

Oh, and don't even get me started about next season's schedule. If you haven't heard, these teams may ring a bell: Colts, Cowboys, Giants, Broncos, Jaguars, Titans, Redskins and Eagles. Yes, the Browns will suit up against each and every one of them. Don't forget those in our division either. Should be fun!

John Carroll University: Oops. Our Bad!

Yes, I know this is a football blog. But as it is just that, a blog, I'm taking my ownership and bending the rules a bit as this is entirely too much to pass up.

There is a Division III school in Northeastern Ohio called John Carroll University. A good school, especially considering the options in NE Ohio. In fact, when I was in college, our club basketball team got absolutely pissed on by their JV squad. It wasn't even worth the van ride up there. But anyways...

It has been brought to my attention that the University is hosting a Winter Formal for 2007. Not a huge deal right? Yes, the whole "Formal" thing gets played out a bit once you get in to college as there are more important things to do with your weekend once you hit college. But this one isn't just your average formal. It's themed!

The theme, you ask? What better than to play off of a favorite holiday tune then to use Bing Crosby's "White Christmas?"

Apparently, "Dreaming of a White Cleveland" has not gone over too well as the Student Union has had to issue an email to the entire University.

On behalf on the Student Union Programming Board and the Office of Student Activities, we would like to clarify any misunderstandings due to the theme of this year’s Winter Formal. “I’m Dreaming of a White Cleveland” was thought up by this year’s committee to go along with Bing Crosby’s widely known Christmas song, “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas,” while excluding “Christmas” and going along with Cleveland’s typical snowy winters. There was never any intention for this theme to mean anything more. SUBP and the Office of Student Activities apologize to anyone who took offense to this title and hopes that those individuals can understand that nothing was meant by the theme except for a well known snowy winter here in Cleveland, the home of John Carroll University.

Thank you for your time and understanding,

Student Union Programming Board & The Office of Student Activities

I would love to know who exactly thought this was a good idea. Is Daniel Carver the Faculty Rep for the SU? I know that in today's society, we're attempting to look past all of these innuendos and all, as "recognizing" them is considered more racist (ahem, Jason Whitlock) than the actual statements. Regardless, the "theme" has now been changed to "Winter Formal 2007." And the logo that was used in the email? Looks like an attempt at disaster recovery to me...

Rest In Peace, Boom King

By now, you have all heard of the tramatic incident that took place at the home of Redskins defensive back Sean Taylor.

This morning, the Washington AFP reports that Taylor has passed away after suffering from the gun shot wounds to his groin. While the back was improving greatly, even reportedly squeezing a nurses hand, he did not make it through the night.

Miami police said Taylor was struck by the bullet in the femoral artery, causing a significant blood loss.

The 24-year old back, and former Miami Hurricane, was the fifth overall selection in 2004. While he was occassionaly known for his on-field actions and off-the-field issues, this is a tragedy for all involved.

Thoughts and wishes go to the Taylor family and the Washington Redskins.

June Parties in November

Only a few hours after turning out a team-high nine tackles on Sunday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Cato June has reportedly been arrested for a DUI. The Tampa Tribune brings us the goods.

Tampa police arrested June, who turned 28 on Sunday, on North Dale Mabry Highway near Hillsborough Avenue at 2:52 a.m., according to a Tampa police report. In an arrest affidavit, Tampa police Officer Peter Bucher said his radar clocked June’s 2005 blue Cadillac sport utility vehicle at 66 mph on Dale Mabry Highway at Osborne Avenue. The Cadillac was in a 45 mph zone, the affidavit said.

66 in a 25 isn't all too bad, but refusing blood-alcohol tests is never a good sign. The report says that June's eyes were "bloodshot and glassy," and there was a scent of alcohol at the scene.

Of course his team is behind him. Derrick Brooks (who conveniently splits time with June at the weak-side) says,

"Obviously I don’t know when and what happened, but this have been a team that has always backed each other through trial and it’s not going to change now, believe me. We’re going to hug the man and obviously learn from his mistake. He’s going to learn from his mistake and we’re going to move on. It’s not anything we’re going to harp on."

It's great that he has the support of his team, because after Roger Goodell gets a hold of him, he may be receiving that support from the sidelines. Thankfully for June, he may not receive any suspension until about the year 2011 with the way this Travis Henry fiasco is going.

So This Is Legal?

I can probably warn you in advance that there are going to be a decent focus on the Browns today. The Steelers lost, the Browns swept the Ravens on the season, and now they're a game out of first.

All of that talk from Ray Lewis that "things will be different when we play them at home. How's that working for you, Ray?

ANYWAYS, I must draw attention to an altercation that took place early on in the contest yesterday. Yes, all of the focus will be on the field goal that was missed, then (not) reviewed and reversed. But this video that provides the evidence of Haloti Ngata blatently punching Joe Thomas in the head...right in front of a referee.

Did he get ejected? Of course not. He did get 15 yards, so the ref obviously saw the punch. The announcers saw it. The other players saw it. How was he still in the game? Whether I'm a Bronws fan or not, the lack of ejection in that instance was utterly rediculous. If helmet to helmet hits are grounds for automatic ejection, shouldn't swinging at another player - while he's on the ground, no less - be thought of in a similar light?

I'm actually going to be very surprised if the league does not do something about this at some point in the week. Of course, I would be more surprised if anything is said regarding the official who did not eject him, but a fine for the player will more than likely be in order. Paging Roger Goodell.

Pardon the awful paintbrush editing, but you catch the drift.

Josh McNeil Has Fun

I'm going to admit that I'm not the most educated when it comes to college football. I live in Ohio, so we get inundated with Ohio State and the rest of the mediocre-at-best Big Ten.

I also know that those in the SEC are not fans of the Big Ten, obviously due to the variance in competition that respective teams have to face.

I, however, am now a fan of the SEC, and the University of Tennessee in particular. OK, just their center.

From EDSBS, a little police blotter news regarding Josh McNeil:

Several hours after the University of Tennessee football team thumped its opponent on the field Saturday, UT center Josh McNeil was quizzed by police about a broken window at his apartment and the three intoxicated women in his bed.

You can bet your ass that Peyton Manning never had such accomplishments. Eli may have had three dudes. Maybe.

(Quick Note: Upon finding McNeil's picture, there is no evidence of what the three females looked like. It may have not been too pretty - if it even matters. Thus the use of "Fantasy Football" tag)

Enough With CBS Already*

Even when the Colts/Pats game is over, we're still inundated with the game itself. No, not the outcome. The sound system.

Everyone and their brother has voiced their opinion on the whole Colts-Pats-Crowd-Noise issues that supposedly took place this past Sunday. I say "supposedly" as I live in the Cleveland market, and did not get to see the game. But I digress.

While we can all have our opinions on both teams and their possible cheating reputations, the NFL's response to this mess has me thinking.

Via the Boston Globe, NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello states:

"CBS has informed us that the unusual audio moment heard by fans during the Patriots-Colts telecast was the result of tape feedback in the CBS production truck and was isolated to the CBS broadcast. It was in no way related to any sound within the stadium and could not be heard in the stadium."

If this is the case, CBS just needs to give up their whole coverage of football all together. Not only can the network not get the video portion of their coverage right, now they go ahead and jack up the audio? Do we ever have this with Fox? ABC? The WWL? While we may have are issues with some of the commentary within each of the networks, do any of the others get the actual transmission of the game any worse than CBS?

Not having a full stable of High Definition cameras in the year 2007 is completely absurd. Using tapes for audio sources may just be worse. Even recordable compact disks would be pushing the envelope in today's era of digital music, sound recording and editing.

Yes, I know the almighty dollar decides who gets to broadcast what games. However, networks should spare some of the money and reinvest it into the firm. Small market day-time radio shows use digital clips for their sound bites. CBS, a multi-multi billion dollar corporation, however? Nope, they go with tapes. Skipping tapes that absorb all of the NFL-related news on a Monday. CBS should thank all of sports coverage for the free publicity today - even though it just shows their further inadequacies as a sports broadcasting network.

Banned Substance?

Word on the street is that Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Marcus Stroud has been busted for banned substances. Radio station 1010XL (via The FanHouse) states that the "substance" apparently violates the NFL's policy on steroids.

The Jags are awaiting results from a secondary test on the lineman to figure out whether or not they will be sans Stroud for four games.

Regardless of the results, I'd like to remind people that Travis Henry tested positive for a FEDERALLY ILLEGAL substance in marijuana, but is "weeks away" from his hearing on the matter. Performance enhancing substances apparently get immediate attention, but those that dabble into the drugs get to play for a few weeks leading up to their trial. You tell me.

Someone May Want To Sit Down With Brandon Marshall

By now, you're likely aware of second-year wide receiver Brandon Marshall. With Javon Walker having a less-than-stellar campaign, Marshall has stepped up pretty big in his absence for the Denver Broncos.

In six games this season, Marshall has 33 receptions for 440 yards and two touchdowns. As of this morning, he can now add a DUI arrest to his resume.

The Associated Press reports that Marshall was pulled over in downtown Denver shortly after 2 a.m, conveniently after Denver's last second win over Pittsburgh in front of a National audience.

While he's not the first athlete to be arrested on DUI suspicions, this matter deserves some more attention from the NFL as it's not Marshall's first run-in with the law this season. In late March, Marshall was arrested (again in Denver) for a domestic dispute that resulted in charges of false imprisonment and domestic violence. Though the charges were later dropped, Marshall was forced to attend anger management counseling.

We can also go back to 2004 where Marshall was arrested in Orlando, resulting in a slew of charges:
- trespassing
- resisting an officer
- refusal to obey
- disorderly conduct and....wait for it...
- assault on a law enforcement officer

Now we'll need to realize that if the NFL is going to do anything to Marshall, it will likely not happen this season. After all, he's not even first in line, thanks to teammate. And don't forget about Najeh Davenport - issues also stemming from the ever-damning "domestic" news.

And to think that Roger Gooddell started off so strong, only to fade into obscurity during the regular season. Although, it is quite the queue for the off-season...

And Here Come The Suits

Lawsuits, that is.

Remember the whole Pacman-Jones-"Making it Rain"-biting-strippers-gunfire escapade? Well while Jones is still watching football from home, or just other strip clubs, the club manager that was shot and paralyzed has filed a lawsuit against Jones, the National Football League, AND the Tennessee Titans.

How can the manager, named Tommy Urbanksi, sue the NFL and the team which employed Jones? Simple.
The fact that the NFL and the Titans did not punish Adam "Pacman" Jones until after Tommy was paralyzedis a proximate cause of Tommy's injuries.

Wait, what? Because Jones was not punished for previous encounters with the law, Urbanski should benefit? If Jones had been suspended before the Las Vegas incident, he wouldn't have been at the club?

Not surprisingly, the NFL and the Titans have said they will fight the lawsuit, which is being called a "Hail Mary" by Pacman's attorney, Robert Langford. Very nice of him to use a football term so that we all understand.

Hi, My Name Is: Koren Robinson

Typically, the "Hi My Name Is" features are about unknown players. In this case, many of fans know of Koren Robinson, but what you may not know is that the veteran receiver has been reinstated today.

If you recall, Robinson was given the chance to rejuvinate his career in Minnesota. He then proceeded to throw opportunity off of a giant cliff by getting busted with a blood alcohol level of 0.11 percent while driving at triple-digit speeds.

He was promptly released by the Vikings and picked up by division rival Green Bay. After playing in a handful of games, Robinson was suspended for a year and spent 90 days in jail due to the abovementioned incident.

Well, today hath shine a ray of light.

..according to Robinson's agent Alvin Keels...

"He just got this letter this morning," Keels said. "He's flying to Green Bay and will start to catch up on things with the team. The Packers have a bye week so he has some time to get caught up."
The Packers will be given a roster exemption for Robinson until they decide when he should come onto the active roster.

His return has been long awaited by quarterback Brett Favre, who feels that the receiver should be given another chance. For a team that throws the ball roughly 50 times a game, another receiver added to the mix will only help. Of course until he gets in trouble again; which, by using history to tell the future,is bound to happen eventually.

Najeh Davenport Goes Brett Myers

...And he's been busted for it.

The back-up running back of the Steelers reportedly opted to celebrate his two-touchdown weekend by choking the mother of his child, and throwing her to the ground. The incident took place on the East side of Cleveland, and was picked up first by Fox 8.

Cleveland police have charged the back with three misdemeanors stemming from the domestic dispute: Domestic violence, endangering children and unlawful restraint. Quite the trifecta.

The "Dump Truck" could face up to up to 180 days in jail and $1,000 in fines if convicted of the first two charges and up to 60 days in jail and $500 in fines for the third.

He's been given the chance to turn himself into the police, and with the Steelers currently on a bye, Davenport will have a few days to weigh the options. No word on if he called anyone at the scene a "retard."

He's Baaaaack

Dare I use the "sky is blue, grass is green" line?

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Bengals wide reciever Chris Henry has found his way back to a court room today. This time, for a possible probation violation.

Henry is on probation in Orange County, Fla., stemming from a weapons charge there following a incident in January 2006.

Word around the courthouse is that prosecutors are trying to have Henry put in jail, even for a few days, based on the seriousness of the original crime.

The report continues to discuss the possible ramifications if Roger Goodell gets to act on this recent news. If you recall, Henry is still waiting to play in his first game of the season after receiving an eight-game suspension due to a slew of other "issues."

Henry orignally had hoped to have the suspension reduced to four games, but after this recent incident, it looks like Henry will be fortunate to get away with the eight he was dealt.

In other quick Bengals news, cornerback Johnathan Joseph has been suspended for the upcoming game after a marijuana conviction from last January.

Meet Selvin Young

With Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry choosing to spend his money on weed (and court appearances) rather than child support, we could be seeing a changing of the guard in Denver.

Ladies and Gents, meet Selvin Young. Young was an un-drafted free agent that found his way into Denver this past April. Since making his way into camp, he's been turning heads.

A "four-star" recruit out of Houston, Texas, Young comes from the University of Texas where he went from Ced Benson back-up to full-time gig, finishing his college career with 20 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards. And for those that care, he graduated from the University after five years.

Fantasy team fister Mike Shanahan named Young the #2 back behind the aforementioned Henry in the off-season, and it looks like he'll be the man once Henry goes down in the court of law, prior to the court of Goodell.

Thus far in the season, Young has averaged roughly 10 yards per touch and is a powering back that can gain the extra yard after the tackle. Of course, we all know that anyone can be a successful running back in Denver, so a talented one makes things that much better. While we still don't know if Henry will miss this week's game, do not be surprised to see an awful lot of the former Longhorn when the commish's gavel hits the table.
